Payment methods commonly used for online shopping in Japan are…

Bank Transfer

Credit Card

Cash on Delivery

Bank Transfer

Bank transfer usually happens before product is shipped out, so you need to confirm payment in the process of order management.

Typically, banks charge $2~3 for bank transfer. This will be paid by customers at bank.

To accept bank transfer from customers, you need to set up a Japanese bank account. This might be nearly impossible for companies which do not have presence in Japan. It’s not realistic to register your company in Japan just to have a bank account either.

So, if  we do order management for you, we will be your payment agency and confirm bank transfers from your customers in Japan. We remit your sales monthly to your bank account overseas.

Cash on Delivery (COD)

COD service is also popular payment methods for Japanese customers. To use this service, customers usually pay JPY300~ depending on total payment amount. To offer this payment method, you need to store your products in Japan since only Japanese carriers, such as Yamato and Sagawa, offer COD service. Once carrier collects cash from a customer, cash will be paid to you once every two weeks.

Credit Card

Most likely, you do not have any problems with credit card payment gateways.

If you are Shopify user and located in the US, Canada, or the UK, “Shopify Payments” is way to go. They offer as low as 2.4 % and 30 cents per transaction.

If you are not located in one of these countries, you need to use a third-party payment gateway. If you want to sell to Japanese customers, you should choose a credit card processor who provides JPY currency option.  Transaction fee is about 2.9%~4% depending on credit card processors.

Paypal is not popular here in Japan, so you don’t want to have only Paypal as payment option.
