When you want to sell online in Japan, one of your concerns must be customs and sales tax.


Who should pay them?


If you sell online to Japanese customers and ship your products directly from outside of Japan to a customer in Japan, the customer in Japan needs to pay customs and sales taxes as an importer. So, there will be a chance that the customer reject to accept your package when it’s delivered. So, you should take this into consideration before you open first Japanese online store.


Here is good news.

If total amount purchased is below JPY16,666 (about USD130 as of JUN, 2015), the customer is exempt from paying customs and sales tax in Japan.


If the total amount is above JPY16,666, customs and sales tax will be applied.
